A New Kind of Middle School

Miss Major Middle is a community school in a special partnership with NYC Public Schools, deeply rooted in Community School District 13. Our nesting space is in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, three blocks from every major train line, and enrollment is completely free for all families.

We are not a charter school and not a private school. MMM offers a full-day, in-person, academically rigorous middle school experience.

Our work honors the legacy of Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, whose life teaches us that liberation begins with care, and that young people flourish when held in communities that see them fully.

Arts at the Heart of Learning

At MMM, theater, movement, and the arts are at the heart of our curriculum. These creative disciplines are not add-ons: they are the center of what we do.

Theater & Performing Arts

Theater is the connective force of our school, with multiple pathways including script writing, stage management, design, and performance.

Movement & Dance

Embodied learning through movement, dance, and physical expression helps students discover who they are and what they can do.

Integrated Academics

Humanities and STEM classes are woven into our arts program through project-based learning that connects creativity with rigorous academics.

Genderful Community

A spacious, imaginative environment where all children can explore who they are, understand others, and build relationships across difference.

How We Learn

Our morning curriculum is built around four lenses: performance, bodies, stories, and the city. Teaching artists run two-week units of study that draw from one or more of these lenses. Math, humanities, and science are woven in. Every unit moves toward a culmination, documented in each student's portfolio.

Afternoons begin with Book Club, then move into systems learning: building confidence and strategies for navigating the world outside our walls, from standardized tests to entrenched racism, homophobia, and transphobia. The day closes with play-making. Three full theater pieces run concurrently throughout the year, and students spend the last hour working on whatever the play needs: technical theater, music, script writing, marketing, and more.

What Does “Genderful” Mean?

“Genderful” describes a way of being with young people that is spacious, imaginative, and liberatory. It is not simply about LGBTQ+ identities. It is about a school where all children can explore who they are, understand others, and build relationships across difference.
